CHAPTER

TWENTY-ONE

Once outside the guardhouse, Sabine strode toward Bakanar’s ornate carriage. Once seated, she was offered a drink that she declined—there was no need at this point to burn mana just to keep up appearances. They rode in silence as the carriage clattered along the cobblestone path to Bakanar’s estate.

The estate had a guarded gate, and once they passed through, Sabine could see that Bakanar liked to make a show of things. A huge fountain with water spraying from the mouths of stone mermaids was centered across from the gate. Sabine surmised that to keep power in this city, you had to not only be ruthless, but you also had to maintain a certain image. This house and the grounds around it would tell the city that Bakanar was both important and powerful.

Other than the fountain, the estate itself was more of a small keep than a house that a family would live in. Armed guards in Bakanar’s livery patrolled the area, and even at this late hour, several servants were working on the grounds. A servant greeted them at the door, his uniform finer than the others.

“My Lord, shall I have the study prepared for a meeting with your guest?” the servant asked.

“Yes, and have a room prepared for her as well. She is Sabine Giroux and may become my new champion,” Bakanar said.

“Lady Giroux, please follow me.” The servant led Sabine away from Bakanar, who was conversing heatedly with several other servants.

“It’s just Sabine. I’m not nobility,” Sabine said.

“As you desire, Sabine. I shall endeavor to make your stay here a pleasant one,” the servant said flatly. He proceeded to give her a quick tour, which Sabine thought was likely designed to give Bakanar time to reach the study before her.

She followed the attendant through the lavish foyer, passing beneath crystal chandeliers that sparkled in the lantern light. The walls were lined with tapestries woven in silks and gold threads. Her footsteps sank into the carpets piled thick upon the floors. She almost felt bad tromping over them in her filthy boots.

Sabine’s escort pointed out several items crafted by artists whom Sabine had never heard of but she understood she was supposed to feel impressed by. When they reached the study, the servant opened a set of carved wooden doors before announcing her. Bakanar looked up from his desk, quill poised above a parchment, as if she was interrupting him from hours of work though he could have only arrived only moments before she did.

“Ah, Sabine,” he said, rising with a politician’s practiced smile. “Shall we get started on the details of our new arrangement?”

Sabine’s jaw clenched. She would play nice, for now. “We will, once you come through on your promise to find Skrix and Orren.”

Bakanar clasped his hands. “Certainly. I have just received an early report right here. But first, where are my manners? Do you require any refreshment? I understand the catering at the guard house leaves much to be desired.”

Looking past Bakanar, she felt something shift in the shadows behind his desk.
